Trees weep for rain

This video work is part of a journey that Serlin made to the city Edirne in Turkey, with the purpose of exploring the memories of her grandmother, Yehudit Verol, just before she left this world. One of the fragments of stories that she collected is the description of her grandmother as a girl looking out the window at the tree with the white blossoms. In the works that Serlin collects from this journey there are long and silent documentations of observation and an attempt to reconstruct memory through activities of the imagination.

The trees weep for rain is the name of a song in Ladino written by Haim Effendi in Edirne, and subsequently sung by the Jews of Salonika on the way to their death in 1942. This is a farewell song from the homeland and the beloved.
